Jelani Taylor is the Black College Art Student and also a dancer, scholar, and choreographer from Virginia Beach, Virginia. Jelani is currently a Dance & Choreography Major at Virginia Commonwealth University. He speaks, and choreographs yearly for VCU Dance’s Salon, VCU Dance's Student Research Forum and is an active member of Black Arts Student Empowerment (B.A.S.E), VCU Lead’s Living Learning Program, and serves on an advisory council for student mental and emotional health. He is a recipient of the Etta and Bernie Edwards Endowment for the Arts -Dance, a departmental Special Recognition Award, Outstanding Service Award, and a 2016-17 VCUArts Undergraduate Research Grant. This Undergraduate Research Grant funded an evening length performative event at Dogtown Dance Theater entitled Journeys: An Interdisciplinary Dance Project for which Jelani served as Co-Artistic Director & Producer. Jelani has created A Black College Art Student to create a platform for saying the unspoken and showcasing the unseen.
