We are losing sight of civility in government and politics. Debate and dialogue is taking a back seat to the politics of destruction and anger and control. Dogma has replaced thoughtful discussion between people of differing views.

The Right Thinks You're Stupid

I have no problem with conservative ideals. I dont agree with them but they are reasonable conclusions to most issues. More laws means less freedom, more spending means greater debt, and we can't help other countries when ours needs help already. These are reasonable claims. I agree with none of them but they are reasonable. Personally I believe that laws protect and create freedoms and that the discussion shouldn't be about more or less laws but productive and constructive vs destructive and aimless laws. I believe that we need to properly spend money in longer term investments such as infrastucture and renewable resources for the country in order to prosper financially and bring down the national debt. Lastly, I believe that the world is so interdependent that helping other countries does help our own, the world works in reciprocity. These are all things that are reasonable and can be debated. What I hate about the right is that they often through reason out the window. When the scientific community says that the earth is getting hotter and we should do something about it, the argument should only be what to do about it not whether or not they are telling the truth. When the American Journal of Medicine says that the american gun homicide rate is fourty nine times higher than other high-income countries, the question is not whether or not to have gun control laws only finding the best way to implement them while protecting second amendment rights. To be reasonable is all I ask. I know that it is easier to win voters when the issues appear black and white so you avoid nuanced opinions and positions, but these issues are not cut and dry and treating them as such is disrespectful to the american public because you make the assumption that your constituents cannot comprehend a nuanced and directed response to a complex issue. Its insulting. The political community as a needs to acknowledge that most stories have more than two sides and I ask the right that even if they have to take an opposing side to garner votes please just let it be reasonable.
